Gas Water Heater Problems & Solutions

Water heaters generally last 8-12 years. Repairs and regular service can lengthen your heater’s life. Some problems indicate faulty components, and other issues can affect heater operation. Our Rub-A-Dub Plumbing professionals can readily pinpoint and solve problems and keep your heater in tip-top condition. The most common problems are:

  • Pilot Light Out: The fix can be as simple as a relight or the gas feed is shut off. It can also result from a clogged or faulty gas line or inlet valve, or the thermocouple is defective.
  • Burner Won’t Light: Could be a gas or air feed issue or valve or venting problem, or defects in the burner. Some newer gas water heater models have a glow plug or spark ignitor instead of a pilot light, and they might be malfunctioning.
  • Water Not Hot Enough: The thermostat may need adjustment or repair/replacement. The burner may not be operating correctly or the gas or oxygen feeds may be blocked or clogged The flue pipe that heats water in the tank could be faulty, the dip tube might be broken or clogged, or the tank may have sediment.
  • Not Enough Hot Water: Your household usage may be exceeding heater and tank capacity. Or there are issues with the tank.
  • Discolored or Bad-Smelling Water: Your tank might be clogged with sediment and need a flush. The anode rod(s) in the tank that prevents corrosion may need replacement (they last 5-10 years). The tank may have corroded and it’s time for a new heater.
  • Noises: Bangs, knocks, pops, whistling and hissing all signal a problem. Could be the pressure relief valve or the tank water is too hot.
  • You Smell Gas: Leaks, feed or valve issues as well as a faulty burner can all allow gas to escape. Unburned gas can be hazardous. Shut off the gas supply.
  • Soot: Indicates that the gas isn’t burning cleanly. A blue flame is good; yellow or orange signals an issue.
  • Wetness: Moisture on or around the heater? Could be condensation, which usually calls for adjustments. But might be a leak that needs repair.
